Accessing blocked sites in your connection at school, workplace

Printer-friendly version

Social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, etc. are usually blocked on networks of educational institutes, offices, etc.

There's a simple trick to this.

You can either follow this one - http://www.ampercent.com/access-facebook-when-blocked-in-office-school/5011/

or a better one is to change your DNS server.

But note that many institutions may be already using OpenDNS to filter the network. So you cannot use OpenDNS. Then you'll have to use Google's Public DNS Server.

OpenDNS servers -

208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220

Google Public DNS Servers -

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

On Windows, go to your connection's status -> properties -> properties of TCP/IP protocol (see screenshot)

Windows Change DNSWindows Change DNS

And you're done.. It should work.

On Linux, you've to use NetworkManager to set the default DNS which is quite easy for Linux ppl I think; after all Linux users are not dumbos Wink

Or if you're not using NetworkManager, edit /etc/resolv.conf, prepend any lines with a semicolon and add these lines below-

nameserver 8.8.8.8
nameserver 8.8.4.4

Amazing! It worked . Thanks Nilesh

Basically the thing is, they

Basically the thing is, they usually use DNS (something like OpenDNS) or proxy to filter. You've to setup your connection use their proxy and gateway. While gateway does the job of DNS lookups through their server, redirecting to an error page if the page is being filtered.

This trick won't work, if they already use OpenDNS (Use Google DNS then Laughing out loud), also you will have to disable the proxy.

I don't see any reason why this should not work, can you describe what settings did you use ?
If you still feel, that the listed DNS servers are not working, you can try some from here - http://theos.in/windows-xp/free-fast-public-dns-server-list/
